Abrolhos Islands: Australia’s Galapagos of the Indian Ocean 🐢🌊

July 28, 2025

Australia’s Galapagos

The Abrolhos Islands are one of Australia’s most wildlife-rich and least-visited island ecosystems.

Looking for a unique alternative to the Galapagos Islands?

Just 60km off the coast of Geraldton, the Houtman Abrolhos Islands deliver a rare mix of wildlife, coral reefs, and maritime history — all within reach of a short flight or scenic coastal drive from Perth.

Often referred to as “Australia’s Galapagos”, the Abrolhos Islands are wild, remote, and teeming with life found nowhere else on Earth.

Protected National Park

The Houtman Abrolhos Islands became a WA National Park in 2019, helping protect their rare wildlife, coral reefs, and historical sites.

Tourism infrastructure on the islands is extremely limited – no hotels, resorts, or ferries.

Coral Reefs

The Abrolhos is one of the southernmost true coral reefs in the Indian Ocean.

Batavia (1629) Shipwreck & Island Heritage

In 1629, the Dutch ship Batavia wrecked on the reefs of Beacon Island. What followed was one of Australia’s most dramatic tales of shipwreck, mutiny, and survival — a story still tied to the islands today, with archaeological remains and interpretive sites to explore.

But the Abrolhos story doesn’t end there. For more than a century, the islands have also supported seasonal fishing camps, especially for Western Rock Lobster, one of WA’s most valuable seafood exports. These camps — painted in bright colours and perched just above the waterline — are a unique part of the islands’ identity and still used by fishing families today.

Sustainable Ocean-to-Plate Dining

A highlight of every Eco Abrolhos cruise is the opportunity to enjoy fresh Abrolhos seafood — often caught right from the boat. From Western Rock Lobster to Dhufish and Baldchin Groper, your meals reflect the pristine waters you’re cruising through.

But it’s more than just flavour — it’s about sustainability. Our crew follows strict regulations within the Fish Habitat Protection Zone, preparing what is caught to be enjoyed onboard only. Guests can even learn how to clean and prepare their own catch at our custom-designed, environmentally friendly fish cleaning station.

It’s WA’s seafood at its freshest — with a minimal footprint and maximum taste.
